Coryn Rivera won the 2018 edition of the Ovo Energy Women’s Tour. The Tour is a British 5-day stage race, and is a great overall victory for the highly-talented Californian rider. Rivera also sprinted to win the second stage in Daventry, beating the 2014 overall winner Marianne Vos on the line. If the social media buzz is anything to go by, women’s bike racing is getting more and more attention—finally!
After 5 gruelling stages over 678 kilometres of rolling English and Welsh landscape, Rivera and her Team Sunweb teammates held off the opposition for one of the women’s team’s biggest victories this year. It was especially impressive, as this year’s OVO Tour route was, according to the organisers, “the most challenging yet”.
Rivera herself bagged a victory prize of almost €14,500, the same prize as the men’s winner in the Tour of Britain will win in September. This is a (we think excellent and respectful) move by the organisers to give women’s racing equal status to the men’s events.
The race followed the route below:
- Stage 1: Framingham to Southwold, 130km
- Stage 2: Rushden to Daventry, 145km
- Stage 3: Atherstone to Royal Leamington Spa, 151km
- Stage 4: Evesham to Worcester, 130km
- Stage 5: Dolgellau to Colwyn Bay, 122km
It is great to see the 25-year-old Rivera hitting the sweet spot in her form just as the riding gets tough. Equally good to see the team effort paying off dividends: as we know it’s teams which win races, not individual riders.

This is not my General Classification win. This is OUR GC win. It took a team to get into the leaders jersey and it took a team to stay in it. So proud of this team and all the hard work we put in this week for this special moment. . . Thank you for your hard work, trust, and faith girls ?? WE DID IT. @juliasoek @leahkirchmann @floortjemackaij @emvandijk @lucinda_brand . . . . #creatingmemories #KeepChallenging #OVOWT
