The 2018 Top 10
During the final days of 2018, we’re inclined to gaze back at the past year. In doing so, our plans, wishes and resolutions for the next year gradually gain shape. We’d like to finish the year in style and so we’ve crunched the numbers and looked up the most popular articles on The Prologue. Especially for you, here’s a list of the best-read articles in 2018.
1. What type of cyclist are you?
The type of cyclist you are depends largely on your body type. If you’re big and have a lot of muscles, then consider training to be a sprinter. If you’re quite light and seem to leave everyone standing when the hills start to get serious, then climbing’s clearly more for you. But what does it take to be a time trial rider? Or a rouleur? And what is a baroudeur? Read on…
2. Five mistakes every cyclist makes
There’s something magical about riding a road bike. It brings you to the most beautiful places, helps you improve your fitness, and even helps you achieve a hoped-for victory. But there’s also a downside to all that beauty: cycling does not go the way you want it to 100% of the time. And although we’d rather think back to the coolest adventures on the bike, we think it’s a good idea to make a list of common mistakes that we’ve all experienced, so that you can avoid them. Read on…
3. Why do I need a CO2 pump?
Roadside punctures are always irritating. But fear no more. In these situations, a trusty carbon dioxide inflator can be of the best bicycle accessories to have on board — here are a few useful tips you need to know before hitting the road with one. Read on…
4. Six things you didn’t know about Bram Tankink
Bram Tankink retired from professional cycling in 2018, aged 39, after an astounding 18 years as a pro. The peloton said goodbye to a beloved rider who was nearly always cheerful. Here are six things you perhaps didn’t know about the man behind the smile. Read on…
5. Bicycle beach racing, err… what is that exactly?
The headwind, sand and salt water blind you as you try and force your pedals round. Your wheels are digging into loose sand and your heart rate is maxed out: welcome to a wet hell. Then suddenly, the sun breaks through the clouds and you’re pedalling full throttle along a smooth beach with a tailwind at 45kph. Your wheels make a satisfying crunching sound as they crush razor shells on the waterfront. This is bicycle beach racing: one of the most Dutch of cycling competitions to have emerged in recent years. Read on…
6. Niki Terpstra — a Dutch pro who chose his own path
Professional Dutch bike racing is currently enjoying a golden age with a new generation of cyclists at the height of their powers. There are potential Dutch winners in virtually every discipline: time trialists, climbers, sprinters and riders, each of whom can perform excellently in the classics. Niki Terpstra is perhaps the biggest name in the latter category, and the cool thing about him is that he truly chose his own career path. He was not a member of any of the big name development teams: he travelled his own independent path. This makes his success all the more impressive. Read on…
7. Four reasons why Tom Dumoulin should (not) ride the Tour de France
Tom Dumoulin and the Tour de France. Discuss. No matter how hard he fought for victory during the Tour de France 2018, he still finished second in the general classification. And that followed second place in the Giro that same year. Dumoulin and his squad at Team Sunweb made no secret of the fact that victory at the Tour de France 2019 is the next goal. However, after the presentations of the routes of both the Giro and Tour 2019, Dumoulin recently shared his doubts about his strategy. Time to weigh up the pros and cons. Read on…
